Conditions That May Qualify for Social Security Disability

Learn how SSA evaluates medical conditions for SSDI and SSI, including the Blue Book listings, medical evidence, and work-related limitations.

Conditions and impairments

How Social Security evaluates impairments

SSA looks at the medical evidence, duration, and functional impact

SSA does not decide an adult disability claim from the diagnosis name alone. It first determines whether medical evidence establishes one or more medically determinable impairments, whether they are severe, and whether any applicable duration requirement is satisfied. SSA then considers whether the impairment meets or medically equals a listing. If not, it assesses residual functional capacity and continues to the vocational steps involving past relevant work and other work.

This center explains common medical conditions, the SSA rules that may apply, evidence that may matter, and work-related limitations SSA may consider. The guides are educational and are not a prediction of any individual claim. SSDI and SSI also have separate nonmedical eligibility rules. For nonmedical screening resources, see the Social Security Disability tools.

Official Listing of Impairments resources

Use SSA’s current adult listings for the official medical criteria. Our Blue Book and impairments articles explain how those listings fit the five-step evaluation.

SSA Listing of Impairments · What is the Blue Book? · Impairments list · Five-step evaluation · Disabled adult child benefits · Disability claim process

  • Medically determinable impairment

SSA first needs objective medical evidence from an acceptable medical source to establish a medically determinable impairment that could reasonably be expected to produce the alleged symptoms. After that, SSA evaluates the intensity, persistence, and limiting effects of the symptoms using the entire record. A normal scan or test does not by itself mean that pain, fatigue, or mental symptoms are irrelevant.

  • Listing of Impairments

The Blue Book groups adult medical criteria by body system. A claimant must satisfy the specific criteria of a listing or medically equal one. If no listing is met or medically equaled, SSA continues the evaluation and assesses residual functional capacity.

  • Residual functional capacity

If no listing is met or medically equaled, SSA assesses residual functional capacity—the most a person can still do despite medically determinable impairments—and uses that assessment at the later vocational steps of the disability evaluation.

  • Duration, work, and nonmedical rules

Most adult disability claims must satisfy SSA's duration requirement. SSDI also has insured-status and work-credit rules, while SSI has income and resource rules. If no listing is met or medically equaled, SSA uses residual functional capacity at the later steps to determine whether the person can perform past relevant work or other work.

Browse by body system

These categories are organized primarily around SSA's adult Listing of Impairments. Some condition guides may appear in more than one category when a condition affects multiple body systems. Each hub links to the applicable SSA chapter and the condition guides included in that category.

    Mental Health

  • Amputation

SSA evaluates amputation under Listing 1.20. What matters is the level of the residual limb, whether a prosthesis can actually be used, and whether a documented two-handed walking or wheeled device is needed. A healed below-knee amputation with a usable prosthesis may miss the listing and still be an RFC case.

    Musculoskeletal
