SSDI vs SSI Eligibility Guide

Work history, resources, and how long the condition has lasted — not a medical approval and not a count of work credits.

SSA decides eligibility. This guide does not calculate insured status or match your file to a listing.

SSDI is insurance you paid for with work credits. SSI is a need-based program with income and resource limits. For most adult disability claims, SSDI and disability-based SSI generally use the same disability standard. SSI statutory blindness has special rules, including no 12-month duration requirement. A diagnosis name is not an approval.

This page asks the nonmedical questions people actually get wrong: Did you work long enough? Are you working at substantial gainful activity now? Could countable resources be over SSI’s limit? We do not add up quarters of coverage. If that is the open question, SSA’s own earnings record is the source — not a website form.

Read SSDI and SSI for the practice overviews, and the Conditions Center for how listings and residual functional capacity work.

Data last verified: 2026-09-19. Calculation version 2026.09.2.

SSI blindness exception: Title XVI statutory blindness has no 12-month duration requirement.

How the calculation works

Work at or above SGA can be a threshold issue for SSDI and non-blind SSI disability claims. High resources flag SSI, not SSDI. Limited work history flags insured status as the first SSDI question. Title XVI statutory blindness has separate duration and work rules, so this general guide should not use the ordinary duration or blind-SGA rules to conclusively rule out SSI when statutory blindness may apply.

What this result does not tell you

It does not say you qualify. It does not score a listing. It does not decide disabled adult child benefits, which are a different Title II claim on a parent’s record.

Relevant legal rules

Adult disability is in the Social Security Act and 20 C.F.R. § 404.1520 (five-step evaluation). SSI financial rules are separate. 2026 SSI federal benefit rates and resource limits are shown as context only.

Example

Someone with a long work record and a checking account under SSI’s resource limit may need to look at both programs. Someone who has never worked enough to be insured may still look at SSI if the financial rules can be met.

What you may want to do next

If work credits or SGA are the worry, use the SGA checker and then request a disability case evaluation. Bring medical providers and a work history, not a printout of this page.
