Skin and Social Security Disability
Chronic skin disorders that can limit use of the hands, tolerate clothing or environments, or require intensive treatment.
Skin disorders can limit use of the hands or legs, standing and walking, tolerance for environmental exposure, and the ability to function outside a protective environment. Current Adult Listing 8.00 includes genetic photosensitivity disorders under 8.07, burns under 8.08, and chronic conditions of the skin or mucous membranes under 8.09. Listing 8.09 evaluates chronic skin lesions or contractures that persist despite the required period of prescribed treatment and cause the functional limitations specified by the listing.
SSA may evaluate skin cancers, immune-related skin manifestations, and other complications under the listings for the affected body system. If a severe skin disorder does not meet or medically equal a listing, SSA continues the evaluation and considers its functional effects through residual functional capacity.
