Short answer
A repossession does not necessarily end the debt. After the lender disposes of the vehicle, a deficiency may remain if the amount legally owed exceeds the credited sale proceeds. Bankruptcy may discharge a qualifying unsecured deficiency. If the vehicle has not yet been sold or otherwise disposed of, whether bankruptcy can support recovery of the vehicle depends on state property law and the facts.
After repossession, state-law notice and disposition rules continue to matter. Bankruptcy can affect collection of a remaining deficiency and, in some circumstances, property rights in an unsold vehicle. Alabama and Georgia differ in how ownership is treated after certain prepetition repossessions, so the correct analysis depends on the state and timing.
